Dr. Erickson is the Director of Remote Health Solutions at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. Program development and systems implementation began with the initiation of a home monitoring program for pediatric cardiology in 2012, and have been formative in her interests as the team lead of nurses and research associates, as a Ph. D.-trained nurse scientist. Currently, she leads a multi-site pediatric cardiac home monitoring study utilizing a mobile health application for home monitoring, known as the CHAMP App. Dr. Erickson’s research interests have been shaped by her nearly 20 years of experience as a pediatric nurse and nurse practitioner, with a focus on high-risk pediatric congenital heart disease.
The complex medical regimens required for survival and reduced morbidity present opportunities for the discovery of clinical, research, and policy changes.
The use of mobile health applications for remote home monitoring in pediatric cardiology has provided opportunities for multiple facets of research, including the application of artificial intelligence to parent-entered inputs for medical team alerts, repository management, rural proactive care models, culturally diverse experiences of home monitoring for parents, and mobile health adherence. As an advanced practice nurse, ongoing expertise is developed through the clinical management of children who require asynchronous remote home monitoring, including holistic care for pediatric development, enteral feeding needs, and complex home care requirements. Dr. Erickson is part of her institution’s AI IDEA Lab for supporting AI implementation and is leading a committee with the local IRB for education for IRB members about the review of AI in Research.
Dr Erickson currently serves as the chair-elect for the American Heart Association’s Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing (CVSN) Pediatric Cardiology Committee.
