Cindy Hsu, MD, PhD

Dr. Cindy Hsu is the Division Chief of Critical Care for the Department of Emergency Medicine and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Surgery at Michigan Medicine, where she cares for critically ill patients in the Emergency Critical Care Center, Adult Emergency Department, and Trauma/Burn ICU. With an MD/PhD degree from Boston University School of Medicine, emergency medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania, trauma/surgical critical care fellowship at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and a master’s degree in Clinical Trial Design & Statistical Analysis from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Dr. Hsu is among the first in her specialty to hold dual board certifications in emergency medicine and surgical critical care. Her mission is to transform cardiac arrest care by bridging the gaps between translational research and clinical implementation, with research spanning from large animal models to clinical trials that focus on innovative approaches to improve neurological outcomes after cardiac arrest. As the site lead investigator for cardiac arrest trials as such EROCA and ICECAP, and co-investigator for the SIREN Clinical Coordinating Center, Dr. Hsu has maintained continuous NIH funding since 2016, including a NINDS R61/33 Innovation Grant to Nurture Initial Translational Efforts. She has also served on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation’s Advanced Life Support Task Force and the American Heart Association’s Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science Subcommittee, while championing emergency care and research equity as a RAND Center to Advance Racial Equity Policy Visiting Health Equity Fellow and leader of the SIREN Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group. Her contributions have been recognized through accolades including the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Early Investigator Award and AHA Resuscitation Science Symposium Young Investigator Award.
